Private Lesson FAQ's

What is West Coast Swing?

West Coast Swing (WCS) is a smooth, versatile partner dance style that evolved from Lindy Hop.

It’s known for its elastic look, the connection between partners, and its ability to adapt to a wide range of music genres, including:

  • Blues
  • R&B
  • Pop
  • Country
  • Contemporary (today’s modern music)
  • Cajun / Zydeco
  • Latin
  • and more.

Unlike many other dances, WCS is danced in a slot, allowing for both partners to improvise and express themselves within the music.

Do I need a partner to take a private lesson?

Not at all!

If you don’t have a partner available, you can just have the dance instructor (Chung) fill in as either the “Leader” or “Follower” role.

Of course, you’re welcome to bring a partner if you’d like, but it’s not a requirement.

What if I have never danced before?

If you’ve never danced before, don’t worry!

  • A private lesson is a great place for a beginner to start
  • Many students start with zero dance experience
  • West Coast Swing (WCS) is a forgiving dance style that allows for personal expression and growth
  • My step-by-step approach will help build your confidence on the dance floor

Remember:

  • Every dancer was once a beginner
  • The dance instructor (Chung) is here to support and encourage you as you learn 🙂
What clothes should I wear for the private lesson?

I typically recommend folks to wear the same kind of things they’d wear to Target or Costco.

If you want specific recommendations, these are some common items…

For clothes:

  • T-shirts, tank tops, blouses
  • Jeans, casual pants, or leggings

Please don’t come dressed in your pajamas lol

What shoes should I wear for the private lesson?

I typically recommend folks to wear the same kind of things they’d wear to Target or Costco.

For shoes, this could be “sneakers”, “tennis shoes”, or something similar.

If you want specific recommendations, these are some common items…

For shoes:

  • Vans, Converse, Keds
  • Boat shoes / Loafers
  • Toms
  • Jazz shoes
  • Fuegos
  • Taygras
  • Tennis shoes / Sneakers
    • (especially with a worn down sole)
  • Shoes with a suede bottom work especially well for West Coast Swing

Shoes that are NOT recommended for West Coast Swing:

  • Flip flops
  • High heels
  • Work boots
Can I bring my romantic partner (and only dance with them)?

Absolutely!

A private lesson is a great idea for a date night activity!

Just one request – please be patient with and nice to your boyfriend / girlfriend / husband / wife and let the instructor handle any and all teaching / constructive criticism.

No matter how much you might love your partner, all it takes is one little comment like “You’re doing this wrong Steve, put your foot here”… to convince your partner to never go dancing with you again.

Instead, focus on having fun together, laughing off any missteps, and enjoying the experience—because a dance lesson with your “boo thang” should be less about perfection and more about creating memories you’ll both cherish.

(At least if you ask me 😊)

What if I'm shy?

If you’re feeling shy, you’re not alone!

Many of our students started out feeling the same way.

It takes a lot of courage to step out of your comfort zone, so I’m proud of you for even trying!

Should I schedule my first private lesson at the dance studio, or at my house / apartment?

If you’ve never met me before, or weren’t referred by a mutual friend, I’d recommend using the dance studio first!

If you’ve already met me, or have taken one of my dance classes, then you can certainly schedule a private lesson for your house / apartment at your convenience.

How can I pay for the private lesson?

You’ll be able to pay online, when you go to schedule the date for the private lesson.

Can I hire you to teach a group of people (or an event)?

Absolutely! Whether it’s a private group lesson for your friends, a university / corporate gathering, or a special celebration, I can teach a class tailored to your group’s needs, size, and experience level.

Please send me an email at LafayetteWestCoastSwing@gmail.com for details about availability, pricing, and creating a memorable experience for your event.

What if I still have questions?
